Lights! Camera! ...

I finally got my blog script working to a point where it faintly resembles a blog so I thought I'd add a proper entry to it instead of the test ones I've been adding so far. Of course, I haven't yet bothered adding a blog input script so I'm writing this one directly as an SQL statement, slashes to escape apostrophes, XHTML tags and all.
It's been a very lazy Saturday. The highlight of my day seems to have been installing Gentoo Linux on an old 4GB hard disk I had lying about (I now have 3 hard drives in my PC). I had heard several people recommend Gentoo for its speed and overall shinyness so I thought I'd give it a whirl to see if I could glean some speed out of my PC which is admittedly an old shed of a box which weighs more than I paid for it in pounds.
At the moment I'm still waiting for Gentoo to install Gnome after hours of chugging along. I didn't realise before that the downloading, compiling and installing routine on Gentoo would take so much time compared to the quick and easy pre-compiled package installations of the other distros I've dabbled with - Fedora, Mandrake/Mandriva and Ubuntu
One thing I can say about Gentoo which I'm quite pleased about is that although there isn't a nice graphical installer which does all the setting-up for you, their website has a great step-by-step walkthrough for installing and configuring Gentoo to suit your own needs. I think it was worth going through the installation procedure just for the learning experience.
So that's my initial impression of Gentoo. I'll say more about it once I've actually gotten to play around with it in a Gnome session.
